A 'Paithan' painting of a ferocious tiger slaying a boar, India, Karnataka or Andhra Pradesh, mid to
28 by 41.2cm.
Provenance
On loan at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, probably 1983.
Catalogue note
This work belongs to a group of paintings that was initially categorised as 'Paithan' due to a number of paintings being found at Paithan in Maharastha in the 1960s. However stylistically these works relate more closely to the South Indian painting idiom, in particular the painted textile and leather-puppet traditions of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Other 'Paithan' paintings are in the British Museum (Dallapiccola, A., South Indian Paintings, A Catalogue of The British Museum Collection, London 2010, pp.278-295) and the James Ivory Collection (Losty, J., Indian Paintings from the James Ivory Collection, London 2010, p.184).
For another 'Paithan' painting in the present sale, see lot 230.
