A Rare Set of Four Meissen Large Candlesticks, Circa 1755
of rococo form, modeled with spirally-molded foliate scrolls, applied with trailing leaves and flowers and painted with scattered flower sprigs, the bases painted with vignettes of animals in landscapes, and birds perched in branches, alternating with scattered butterflies, crossed swords marks in underglaze blue.
Height 9 7/8 in.
24.8 cm
Catalogue note
Candlesticks of this form were made in at least two sizes, and it is rare to find examples in the larger size such as the present lot. A rare set of candlesticks, in the smaller size (6 7/8 in. high), was sold at Sotheby's London, December 2, 2003, lot 34.
The model was copied at the Chelsea factory only a few years later. Eight Chelsea examples were sold at Sotheby's New York, Property of Mrs. Charles B. Wrightsman, December 8, 1989, lots 134 and 135, one of which is also illustrated in Carl Dauterman, The Wrightsman Collection, New York 1970, p. 352, no 159.
