In a letter of July 9, 1761, Horace Walpole grumbles to Sir Horace Mann, the British Minister at the Court of Tuscany, commenting about the new fashion in table decoration at the banquets of the English nobility:
“Jellies, biscuits, sugar-plumbs, and creams have long given way to harlequins, gondoliers, Turks, Chinese, and Shepherdesses of Saxon China. But these, unconnected, and only seeming to wander among groves of curled paper and silk flowers, were soon discovered to be too insipid and unmeaning... Confectioners found their trade molder away"
cited from Bet Mcloud, 'Horace Walpole's Ceramics at Strawberry Hill', International Ceramics Fair and Seminar Handbook, London, 1995.
A pair of the Meissen prototype figures, modeled by J. F. Eberlein, was sold at Sotheby's London, October 25, 2016, lot 605.
