A Saint-Cloud White Cup and Trembleuse Saucer, Circa 1735

the exterior of the cup and the interior of the saucer molded with overlapping artichoke petals, the side of the cup with an angular scroll handle, and the center of the saucer with a plain trembleuse gallery.

Catalogue note
A second cup and trembleuse saucer of this rare form is illustrated in E & H Manner, Early French Soft Paste Porcelain, exh. cat., London, 2021, pp. 18-19, cat. no. 4, where the authors not a covered water jug with similar molding in the Musée des Arts Décoratif, Paris, which has a décharge mark to the silver mounts dating it to 1726-32, mus. no. 1887, 3761. A toilet box and cover with the same molding is in the British Museum, London, reg. no. Franks.342. A saucer is at Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, ob. no. 1913.598, illustrated in Linda H. Roth, Clare Le Corbeiller, French Eighteenth-Century Porcelain at the Wadsworth Atheneum, The Pierpont Morgan Collection, 2000, p. 22, where the authors note that among the Meissen porcelains made for Marchand Mercier Rudolph Lemair were numerous beakers "a artichaux" or "auf Artischocken arth". The Authors also note that the prince de Condé's 1740 inventory included "deux petite Jattes en forme d'artichaux de Porcelaine ancienne", likely referring to Japanese porcelain.
