Of Asian inspiration, it first appeared in Europe in the late Middle Ages and became common in the Colonial Latin American Empire from the late 16th century onward. Essentially a chest with a fall front, the interior is divided into an arrangement of drawers traditionally inlaid with camel bone and meant as a travelling chest.
