A Louis XV Giltwood Console, Probably Retailed by Denis Genty, Mid-18th Century
with a veined brown marble top, stamped D GENTY
Denis Genty, maître in 1754
height 34 1/2 in.; width 59 in.; depth 27 in.
87.5 cm; 150 cm; 68.5 cm
Provenance
Private Collection, Versailles
Eric Vidal, Paris
L’Art De Vivre: Property From The Collection Of Kathleen And Martin Field, Sotheby's New York, October 20, 2018, Lot 1242
Catalogue note
Denis Genty was received as master ébéniste into the Paris Cabinetmakers' Guild in 1754 and because of strict guild regulations would not have been authorised to provide carved console tables, firescreens or chairs, which fell under the aegis of the Joiners' Guild, the Compagnie des Menuisiers. However, like many 18th-century ébénistes he acted as both a manufacturer and a retailer, and it is likely he added his stamp to this console as a seller. The slightly smaller console table sold as lot 1240 in this sale appears to be en suite and was probably also sold by Genty.
