Thomas Hickey
Dublin 1741 - 1824 Madras
Portrait of a young man in a garden landscape
signed and dated center left: T. Hickey / 1782
oil on canvas, an oval, unframed
canvas: 10 ⅝ by 8 ⅝ in.; 27 by 21.9 cm.
Catalogue note
Signed and dated 1782, this charming portrait of a young boy was painted by Irish artist Thomas Hickey during his tenure in Lisbon from 1780 to 1784. The sitter, presumably the son of an aristocratic Portuguese family, is enlivened by the bold, saturated hues of his costume —cherry, burgundy, and dusty rose—and tinge of red in his cheeks. Standing on a balcony that overlooks his family estate, the young sitter conveys an attitude of casual elegance. With his left hand tucked formally into his waistcoat, the boy seemingly addresses the beholder with his outward gaze and inviting gesture of his open right palm. In the background, Hickey depicts the landscape and foliage with an expressive and painterly approach. Rendering the trees and foliage with rapid, energetic brushstrokes of unmodulated color, Hickey balances the formality of portraiture with a remarkable sense of freshness and vitality.
