The Property of a Lady

French School, circa 1560

Portrait of a lady, bust-length, wearing pearls

oil on oak panel

unframed: 21.1 x 15.9 cm.; 8¼ x 6¼ in. (with additions of up to 1.8 cm. at all four margins)

framed: 51 x 44 cm.; 20⅛ x 17⅜ in.
Provenance

Archibald Vincent Smith-Sligo (circa 1825–90), Inzievar, Dunfermline, by 1883 (his bookplate on the reverse);

Thence by descent to the present owner.Exhibited

Edinburgh, Scottish Royal Academy, Loan exhibition of works by Old Masters and Scottish National Portraits, 1883, no. 128 (as Hans Holbein the Younger, 'Portrait, supposed to be Mary Queen of Scots when a girl').Catalogue note

This portrait is typical of the 1560s in France, when there was a market for small-scale portraits of women such as the lady represented here. Most of these portraits conformed to a generic 'type', and identifications were attributed to them subsequently - in the case of this work, in the nineteenth century it was suggested that the sitter might be a young Mary Queen of Scots.

The lady's costume is somewhat of an amalgamation of contemporary styles: the black costume relates to German portraiture of the period, whereas the headdress – made up of a satin or possibly velvet band, edged with narrow silver-gilt braid, with a very fine gauze decorated with metal thread attached – is of a broader international style found in portraits from as far afield as Portugal, but also France. This painting most probably originates from the Fontainebleau School of the 1560s; such portraits were also produced later, in the 1630s.
