Jacob Schalcken

active in The Hague between 1683 and 1686–1733

A young boy holding a candle

signed lower left: J. Schalcken

oil on oak panel

unframed: 21.1 x 18.5 cm.; 8⅜ x 7¼ in.

framed: 40.7 x 37.6 cm.; 16 x 14¾ in.
Catalogue note

This work is based on a painting in a Dutch private collection dated between 1695 and 1700 by the artist's uncle, the better-known Godfried Schalcken (1643–1706), with whom Jacob trained.1

We are grateful to both Anja Sevcik and Guido M.C. Jansen for independently endorsing the attribution to Jacob Schalcken on the basis of digital images. Sevcik has also kindly pointed out the existence of a similar signed work by the artist in a private collection, also inspired by one of his uncle's compositions.
