Description
Chinese 18th Century or earlier A large and rare carved painted wood figure of Kuan Yin, the Bodhisattva of mercy, seated cross legged on a draped base with both hands raised, the swirling celestial garment looped at the elbows and sweeping out over the right shoulder. The head is tilted to one side with a serene expression and wearing a high lotus diadem. Traces of gilding and original polychrome. With original Barling, 1970 invoice. See Christie's, Annabel's, Lot 124. The sister statue that realised GBP 137,500 Property of a lady Provenance: Barling, 112 Mount Street, London, 8th November 1970, where purchased by the current owner's mother. Dimensions: 42 in.
