Jean Baptiste van Loo (French, 1684-1745) and Studio Portrait of Frederick, Prince of Wales, small full-length, in robes of state, with the Star of the Garter, beside a table on which is his coronet; and Portrait of Augusta, Princess of Wales, small full-length, in a laced dress and robes of state, beside a table on which is her coronet. Oil on canvas Provenance: Christies London, British Pictures, 12 July 1996 These pictures are reduced versions with slight differences to the pair in the Royal Collection, both signed and dated 1742 and measuring 94.5 in. x 62 in. (see O. Millar, The Tudor, Stuart, and Early Georgian Pictures in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, 1963, I, no. 536 and, II, pls, 187 and 189) Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707-1751), was the eldest son of King George II, who he predeceased by 15 years. He formed a notable collection of pictures and married Augusta of Saxe-Gotha (1719-1772) daughter of King Frederick II of Saxe-Gotha, in 1736. Dimensions: (Frame) 40.5 in. (H) x 29.5 in.
