Circa 1880, Chinese A pair of Portuguese market small armorial dishes Hard-paste porcelain The centre enamelled with a coat-of-arms and the inscription 'PALACIO DO GOVERNO DE MACAU,' enclosed by a circular gilt band, the well with iron-red and gilt exotic birds by rockwork, the borders with precious objects. In a dark leather case. These plates relate directly to a plate in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (no. 51.86.329). Another similar plate was sold at Christie's on 15 November 2000, lot 303, this dated 1880 and from one of four services made for the King of Portugal.  These dishes are from one of four Chinese services which were made for King Dom Luís I, King of Portugal (1838-1889), who reigned from 1861. A plate from this service in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Helena Woolworth MacCann Collection, 51.86.329) is illustrated by M. Beurdeley, Porcelain of the East India Companies, London, 1962, p. 186, cat. 159, and a plate from the service was sold by Christie’s, London, on 15 November 2000, lot 303. Dimensions: 16 cm diameter
