Important Information
We are delighted to offer our Important Summer Sale at Sloane Street Auctions on June 29th. Highlights include a Chelsea private collection of old master drawings that include names such as Rembrandt, Paul Bril, Domenichino and Sir Joshua Reynolds. This collection is complemented by another local private consignment of 19th Century drawings and illustrations. The collection presents works ranging from Arthur Rackham to Gilbert Holiday, and everything in between. A small Nocturne landscape by Whistler and several lifetime Rembrandt etchings conclude the drawings and illustrations.
A rediscovered painting of a Bengal Tiger by Thomas Landseer leads the Old Master highlights along with a portrait of a procuratore by Jacopo Bassano, a Grand Tour portrait of James Hugh Smith Barry by Angelika Kauffman which has remained in the family since the time of its creation, as well as a portrait of Dr. Richard Guy, an esteemed 18th Century gentleman oncologist, painted by Hugh Barron, himself a student of Sir Joshua Reynolds and a violin prodigy.
There are a number of sporting pictures focusing on the horse which are supported by three 19th century French equine bronzes of considerable quality. Highlights amongst the pictures of equine and racing interest include an early signed preparatory sketch by Sir Alfred James Munnings of American heiress Miss Belle Baruch. As well as, horses and elegant company on Newmarket Heath attributed to John Wootton, as well as a captivating scene by James Pollard of The Gold Cup at Doncaster c. 1839.
The 20th century is well-represented by Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, Andy Warhol, John Tunnard, William Black, and Nikolai Roerich. We are very pleased to present a work from Roerich's 'Himalaya Series' c. 1925-1927. This work is signed in Cyrillic and is numbered ' 67'.
We look forward to seeing you for viewing.
