Description
European school of the 18th century.
"Pair of angels".
Carved wood.
Retains its original polychromy.
Crack in the wrist of one of them.
Measurements: 37 x 27 x 17 cm. u.s.c.
Couple of child angels of baroque style, dated in the 18th century, carved in wood in round bulk, polychromed in their naked anatomies and with gilded wings. They appear in a flying position, in graceful, elegant and naturalistic postures, balanced despite their dynamism. One of them places his little hand on his chin in a pensive attitude, the other extends both arms, but both share his ethereal and plump appearance at the same time.
Throughout Europe, sculpture played an important role during the Baroque period. It appeared in public spaces, palaces and private residences, churches and cathedrals, government buildings, among others, and reflected a wide variety of subjects, from saints, popes and heroes to famous people, statesmen, mythological figures... Formally, these are works with very free compositions, always marked by their dynamism and by a marked tendency towards instability in the representation, in keeping with the taste for the curved line so typically Baroque.
