Description
Flemish school, mid 17th century.
"Calvary".
Oil on copper.
With repainting. Restorations.
Measurements: 58 x 74 cm; 78 x 94 x 2,5 cm (frame).
We are in front of a fully baroque composition, of fluid brushstroke that dilutes the contours and creates expressive effects of chiaroscuro. Christ occupies the compositional centre, crucified between two thieves. The anatomical figures flanking him writhe in pain on their crosses, but Jesus remains serene, despite the lance that a soldier keeps thrusting into his side. His body, modelled with subtle shifts of light, oozes inner light. His whiteness contrasts with the darker flesh of the thieves. At her feet, Mary Magdalene begs for mercy. On the right, the Virgin and John the Evangelist are consoling each other, their eyes misty with tears. A beautiful horse, ridden by a soldier, is foreshortened. In the background are other groups of people, apostles and humble villagers. The twilight and amber light emphasises the supernatural charge of the event. However, it is a break of glory that shows a real atmospheric phenomenon, without artifice or religious symbolism.
