Description
European school of the 18th century.
"Pair of angels".
Carved wood.
Lack of paint. Retains its original polychromy.
Measurements: 29 x 21 x 13 cm. c.u.
They have been placed in graceful postures, in a symmetrical relationship (balancing each other's movements), as if they were floating in the celestial vault. Their flesh tones have been worked with naturalism, with a soft and smooth appearance. They spread their arms in loving gestures, their bare feet rise ethereally and their seraphic faces, with plump cheeks, are highly expressive.
Throughout Europe, sculpture played an important role during the Baroque period. It appeared in public spaces, in palaces and private residences, in churches and cathedrals, government buildings, among others, and also reflected a wide variety of subjects, from saints, popes and heroes to famous people, statesmen, mythological figures... Formally, these are works with very free compositions, always marked by their dynamism and by a marked tendency towards instability in representation, in keeping with the taste for the curved line so typically Baroque.
