Description

Frame of the 19th century.
Size: 33 x 40 cm; 55 x 62 cm (frame).
During the 17th century several influences, mainly thematic, arrived in Holland from Flanders. Within the Flemish school there was at this time a great specialisation of the painters, centred on themes of still lifes, architectures, genre paintings, etc. Within this latter range of themes, particularly notable were the tavern scenes depicted by Adriaen Brouwer and David Teniers the Younger. The success of this type of scene deeply influenced the Dutch Baroque school, dominated by Rembrandt and Hals, who remained a beacon for 18th-century painters. This painting of tavern interiors, executed in Holland in the late Baroque period, remains faithful to a genre that was particularly popular among Dutch artists: intimate scenes of the working classes. While certain artists such as Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch focused on the depiction of bourgeois life, others such as Cornelis Pietersz Berga focused on the observation of village life. In this particular work, the artist is close to the subject; the filtered light burnishes the faces and brings out the brightness of the clothes, giving warmth to the atmosphere and making it cosy. Following Flemish stylistic parameters in the descriptive precision, each piece of clothing has been worked in its just qualities and textures. The characters engage in silent conversations by exchanging glances. Their gestures introduce a subtle narrative.
