Description
17th century Dutch school.
"Tavern scenes".
Set of three oil paintings on copper.
Two of them signed "A. B. Normand", 1657.
Measurements: 8,8 cm.
Set of three oil paintings on copper in which three Dutch types are represented. Taking into account the objects that accompany the characters (jugs, bowls and bottles), we are clearly in front of three 17th century tavern representations, a very common genre in this context. The genre of tavern painting was one of the main innovations in the Flemish school of the 17th century. Created by Adriaen Brouwer (1605-1638) and David Teniers (1610-1690), it is characterised by the depiction of tavern interiors populated by colourful and vulgar characters, often even grotesque in Brouwer's case, bordering on caricature. This type of scene, violent in the case of Brouwer and his followers or more cheerful in the case of Teniers' school, was widely disseminated and spread to Holland, where it also created a new genre. In this type of painting the figures are the absolute protagonists, particularly their faces and expressions. They are also works derived from naturalism, worked in reduced chromatisms, with earthy, ochre, carmine, etc. colours.
