Description
Pair of Carlos III armchairs; XVIII century.
Carved and gilded pine wood.
They show faults and restorations.
Measurements: 119 x 62 x 56 cm (x2).
This pair of Carlos III armchairs, with a structure entirely made of wood, is decorated with classical-inspired motifs, carved on the waist, knees, armrests and crest. It has cabriole front legs and a sinuous backrest.
In 18th century Spain there was a great evolution, from an ordinary piece of furniture around 1700, within a very conservative panorama, to a splendid piece of furniture of great quality and artistic personality at the end of the century. The change came with Charles III (queen between 1759 and 1788), when he was faced with the need to furnish the new palace. At that time, the level of demand and quality of the furnishings increased considerably. This led to an extraordinary improvement in the second half of the 18th century. Charles III saw the last stage of Rococo furniture, a type of furniture which, unlike in the rest of Europe, took Italy rather than France as its point of reference.
