Description
Spanish school, 17th century.
"Saint Justus".
Polychrome and gilded carving.
Measurements: 35 x 28 x 20 cm.
The bust of Saint Justus, the child martyr, has been represented in round figure. The expressiveness of the carving is typically baroque: the countenance is illuminated by the big eyes and the fleshy lips. The little boy tilts his head to show the mortal wound, the emblem of his martyrdom. He wears a richly brocaded tunic. The piece is also notable for the attentive work on the textures, the nooks and crannies of the ears, resolved with subtle naturalism, as well as the plasticity of the finishes.
Saint Justus is usually depicted accompanying Saint Shepherd, the pair being known as "the child saints". They are described by tradition as Hispano-Roman martyr saints born in Tielmes (Madrid), executed in 304 in Alcalá de Henares by order of the governor Dacian, during the persecution of Diocletian. Justo and Pastor, aged seven and nine respectively, refused to renounce Christianity.
