"Lesson in music".
Oil on paper.
Signed in the lower right corner.
With label of the Sala Petritxol, Barcelona, on the back.
Measurements: 40 x 30 cm; 55 x 44 cm (frame).
In this painting of romantic style, in which a music lesson is represented to a young lady, the meticulous and precious stroke of Antoni Fabrés is evident, his careful style, capable of extracting brilliant tonalities that give vivacity to the gestures, the flesh tones and the attires. Thematically, we also see Fabrés's preference for medieval settings and orientalist influences, in keeping with the taste of the bourgeoisie of his time. The aristocratic furniture, the bronze gleam of the jug, the satin attire, make up a picture that is imbued with the delicacy of a miniature. A painter and sculptor trained between Barcelona and Rome thanks to a scholarship, the latter was the place where he became acquainted with the works of Fortuny, a painter who would have a tremendous influence on him throughout his career as an artist, especially in the creation of works with orientalist themes. As for his biography, Antonio Fabrés soon achieved success as a watercolourist, producing precious illustrations for books and publications. He was awarded the second medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1886, and in 1894 he opened his studio in Paris. In 1904 he was called to Mexico to take up the post of inspector general of Fine Arts, where he was also director of the San Carlos Academy. Fabrés was recognised in all the cities he travelled to, being acclaimed in Barcelona, London, Paris, Vienna and Lyon, and took part in the Venice Biennales of 1897 and 1910. He is represented in the Prado Museum, the Fine Arts Museums of Barcelona, Granada and Buenos Aires and the Mathaf Gallery in London, as well as in various private collections both in Spain and abroad.
