FILIPPO DE PISIS (Ferrara, 1896-Milan, 1956).
"Glass of Fiori", 1949.
Watercolour on paper.
Signed and dated.
Certificate of authenticity enclosed.
Measurements: 50 x 38 cm.
Italian painter, poet and writer, Filippo de Pisis was self-taught. As a poet, he published for the first time in 1916, with: "Canti della Croara". This was followed by Vaghe stelle dell'Orsa (Diary, Bologna 1916 - 1918), Il Signor Luigi B., Il verbo de Bodhisattva and Memorie di una scimmia. He came into contact with the painters of the Metaphysical Painting movement: Giorgio De Chirico, Carlo Carrà and Alberto Savinio, who lived in Ferrara during the First World War. He organised exhibitions in the palatial salons of his flats in Ferrara - Pisis came from a wealthy family in the city - where Chirico first exhibited his metaphysical works. In 1920 he moved to Rome, where he held his first solo exhibition of drawings and watercolours. That same year he obtained a secondary school teaching post in Rome, where he frequented artistic and literary circles and visited the city's museums. He exhibited his work at the Teatro Nazionale and took part, together with De Chirico and Donghi, in the III Biennale di Roma in 1925. A few months later he moved to Paris, where he became acquainted with the work of Picasso, Monet, Daumier and Delacroix. He specialised in still lifes and landscapes, especially urban ones, always inspired by the metaphysical pictorial doctrine. He also produced a series of homoerotic sketches of male nudes, in a neo-realist style, as well as some portraits, but these works are less well known. He also had several solo exhibitions and his work was selected to take part in the first (1926) and second (1929) Mostra del Novecento italiano organised by Margherita Sarfatti and held in Milan. He made his exhibition debut at the Bragaglia Gallery, but it was the Venezia Mostra of 1948 that consecrated him. His painting was exhibited in Florence shortly before his death twice at the Venice Biennale, once during his lifetime and once posthumously (the latter a retrospective). Most of his work is housed in the Museo Filippo de Pisis in Ferrara. Several institutions, such as the Reina Sofía and the IVAM in Valencia, have paid posthumous tribute to him.
