Grotesque mask with fountain mouth.
White marble.
The lot will be available after a period of approximately 15 days after payment has been made.
Measures: 16 x 13 x 6 cm.
Rare marble grotesque fountain mask representing a satyr characterised by an incisive and spectacular sculptural depth, perceptible even in the smallest details. The satyr looks at us with his eyebrows furrowed, his mouth open in an ironic smile, his gaze hypnotic, almost mocking; these "apotropaic" figures (from the Greek: apotrepo, "to drive away") not only had an aesthetic value, but also an almost superstitious function, they were able to repel any evil spirit to drive away adversity and negativity, so they were part of a world full of mystery and magic that haunted the parks with their "grottoes", in the gardens and squares of Renaissance cities.
After the discovery of the Domus Aurea in Rome, these pictorial and mannerist "fantastic" models were in vogue until the first decades of the 17th century. Many masks were used at the time on the portals of palaces or adorning and forming the mouths of private fountains as well as public aqueducts. Examples of these marvels can be found in many places in Italy, such as Genoa, Florence, Rome, Spoleto, etc., whose protagonists were the designs of artists such as, (to name but a few), Andrea di Michelangelo Ferrucci, Gian Giacomo Della Porta, Bernardo Buontalenti, and made by excellent sculptors, such as, for example, Leonardo Sormani.
Fortunately, this mask spent its entire life in an indoor environment, as the mouth of a fountain in a noble villa, which has miraculously preserved it.
