"Landscape with washerwoman and flock.
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 57,5 x 48,5 cm.
Pending export certificate.
The work will be available approximately 15-20 days after payment.
The present work shows a typical Italian landscape view set in the Roman countryside, very appreciated by the Flemish artists who came to the capital to perfect their technique and to study closely the great masters, finding in the central Italian territory an incomparable landscape for the realisation of their works. The canvas fully represents this concept, depicting a beautiful landscape executed according to the dictates of 17th-century Flemish painting. In the present work a washerwoman is accompanied by a shepherd who watches over his animals while resting on a rock by the roadside.
Karel Dujardin was an artist belonging to the Golden Age of Dutch painting. His oeuvre centred on the production and study of small landscapes in the Italian style and canons, although he also executed historical and mythological paintings as well as various portraits. His training in Italy was based on his reception with the Bentvueghels, Flemish artists who were living in the country.
After his first stay in Italy, he decided to travel to France, where he contracted considerable debts and married his landlady to free himself from them. He went with her to Amsterdam, where his paintings were highly appreciated, and then returned to Rome in 1675 at the invitation of his friend Joan Reynst. Once in the Italian capital they made a Grand Tour of other Italian cities, but when Reynst returned to Amsterdam Dujardin stayed in Italy and made his last trip to Venice, where he died of poisoning.
