It presents restorations.
Measurements: 151 x 89 cm; 160 x 104 cm (frame).
Following closely the Murillesque model of the Immaculate Conception, the figure of the Virgin rests her feet on a crescent moon, around which several cherubs are distributed. As in Murillo's many versions of this theme, all superfluous elements disappear in order to focus on the mystical atmosphere enveloping a Virgin with soft features and an ethereal appearance. Mary, dressed in white and blue (symbols of purity and the concepts of truth and eternity, respectively), appears surrounded by child angels, who have been skilfully modelled in foreshortened and varied poses, frolicking among cottony clouds. The Virgin's cloak is draped in a sensual play in which the long, wavy, silky hair also participates. An angel carries a floral bouquet, a symbol of the litany. The Holy Spirit has been omitted, but the ascending movement of the figure is captured by the subtle chromatic shifts. The crescent moon alludes to Diana's chastity. The Marian iconography of the Assumption and the Immaculate Conception is combined. This new conception became the purest way of representing Mary's glory during the Andalusian Baroque period.
