"Mystical nuptials of Saint Catherine".
Oil on canvas. Re-drawn.
Measurements: 110 x 99 cm.
Following a tenebrist aesthetics, the author configures this scene through a group of monumental figures, which represent the Virgin with the Child in her lap, St. John and a young man who represents the figure of St. Catherine, which is deduced by the gesture that the lady adopts with her hand extended towards the Child Jesus. The Infant Jesus takes the young woman's hand and holds one of Saint Catherine's fingers with his small fingers, as if he were about to put a ring on it and betroth her. The theme of the mystical betrothal of Saint Catherine became very popular during the Baroque period, with the intention of conveying to the faithful the exemplary idea of the life of the saints and their capacity for union with religion, symbolised in a masterly way in a matrimonial union. Iconographically, no fixed pattern was established, since on many occasions an adult Jesus is depicted, and the presence of the Virgin is not always present.
The cult of Saint Catherine spread throughout Europe from the 6th century onwards, she is included in the group of the holy helpers and is invoked against sudden death. Catherine was born around 290 into a noble family in Alexandria. Gifted with great intelligence, she soon stood out for her extensive studies, which placed her on the same level as the greatest poets and philosophers of the time. One night Christ appeared to her and she decided, at that moment, to consecrate her life to him and to consider herself his fiancée, in a sort of mystical marriage. When the Emperor Maximian came to Alexandria to preside over a great pagan festival, Catherine took advantage of the occasion to try to convert him to Christianity, which aroused his anger. To test her, Maximian imposed on her a philosophical debate with fifty wise men whom she would try to convert. Catherine succeeded, provoking the emperor's wrath. The emperor had the sages executed, but not before proposing to the saint that she marry one of them, which she flatly refused. The emperor then ordered her to be tortured using a machine with spiked wheels. Miraculously, the wheels broke when they touched Catherine's body, and she was finally beheaded.
