The work will be available approximately 15-20 days after payment.
The painting depicts Saint Catherine standing in front of a plinth with two powerful twisted columns in a slightly busy river landscape. Clad in a white dress and covered at the same time by a golden cloak, she is shown holding a palm branch in her right hand as a sign of her martyrdom and a large sword in her left. In connection with her martyrdom and iconographic attributes, a large spiked wheel appears next to her. St Catherine must have renounced her Christian faith under the Emperor Maxentius, but when she did not, she was first subjected to the martyrdom of the wheel and then beheaded.
The work, whose attribution to Stalbernt had been advanced, seems rather close to the great Flemish master Rubens, probably by one of his pupils or by a skilled artist active in his circle.
There are many references that point to this second hypothesis. Firstly, the columns depicted here and the gilded mantle clearly correspond to Rubens' "The Head of Cyrus carried to Queen Tomiri". Again, the depiction is a clear derivation of the engraving "Sancta Catherina Virgo et Martyr" by Bolswert Schelte Adamsz (1581-1659), which in turn goes back to an unknown and probably lost painting by Rubens, which is probably an adapted copy of the figure of the saint on the reverse of the right side panel of Rubens' triptych "The Exaltation of the Cross" in Antwerp Cathedral.
Returning to the present work, the saint raises her gaze towards two winged "putti", one of whom holds a laurel wreath with flowers and the other throws flowers on the ground in front of St Catherine. To complete this moment of glory, a Flemish landscape with a lake, plants, water lilies and flowers completes this marvellous and harmonious work.
