"Penitent Magdalene".
Oil on canvas. Re-retouched.
It has restorations.
It presents marks caused by xylophages.
Measurements: 90,5 x 80 cm; 106 x 95 cm (frame).
The scene is placed with a dark background, even more outstanding thanks to the presence of a "colour spot" on the right that opens towards a landscape, creating the idea of a cave, as a space in which the scene is inscribed, to which is added the theatrical use of light in the painting. The beautiful young woman who appears three-quarter length, covered only with a reddish cloak, with her hair loose and long, and holding one of her hands to her breast, is Mary Magdalene, withdrawn like a hermit meditating. By this point in the Baroque period this iconography of the Penitent Magdalene was already so widespread that it did not require many iconographic attributes, which are evident in this scene: the cross, the sacred scriptures, the skull and the perfumer, the latter arranged in the manner of a still life.
Mary Magdalene is mentioned in the New Testament as a distinguished disciple of Christ. According to the Gospels, she housed and provided materially for Jesus and his disciples during their stay in Galilee, and was present at the Crucifixion. She was a witness to the Resurrection, as well as the one in charge of transmitting the news to the apostles. She is also identified with the woman who anointed the feet of Jesus with perfumes before his arrival in Jerusalem, which is why her main iconographic attribute is a knob of essences, like the one shown here. Alone, Mary Magdalene is usually depicted as she is here, doing penance in the desert, repentant for her past sins. The story of this saint serves as an example of Christ's forgiveness, and conveys the message of the possibility of redemption of the soul through repentance and faith.
