"The Four Evangelists".
Oil on panel (x4).
It presents faults and restorations on the pictorial surface.
Measurements: 45,5 x 38,5 cm (x4).
Set made up of four panels in which the four evangelists are represented, each one of them individualised on each panel. Aesthetically, the four works have been conceived in a similar way, with the protagonist slightly displaced from the centre, represented either with a pen or with a book that directly alludes to his religious role as the creator of the Gospels of the New Testament. The space in which they are inscribed, with the exception of Saint John who is shown on the outside, denotes an inspiration of a classical character with architecture in which elements of antiquity can be appreciated such as the Ionic capitals, or semicircular arches, perhaps in the case of Saint Mark, the space is much more sober. In the case of Saint John, the lack of architecture in favour of the landscape reveals that it is the Island of Patmos, so that the artist leaves no detail of the composition to chance, thus showing his great knowledge of religion.
The main figures in each scene are Saint Matthew, Saint John, Saint Luke and Saint Mark. The first appears next to a small angel, a reference to the fact that his Gospel begins with a review of the genealogy of Christ, the Son of Man. The eagle has been associated with the figure of St. John because his is the most abstract and theological Gospel, and therefore the one that rises above the others. The bull would be Luke, since his writings begin by speaking of the sacrifice made to God by Zechariah, father of John the Baptist. Finally, the lion is identified with St. Mark because his Gospel begins by speaking of John the Baptist, "a voice crying in the wilderness", whose voice would be like that of the lion.
