Visigothic belt buckle. Iberian Peninsula, 6th-7th century AD.
Bronze and vitreous paste.
Provenance: L. Benguerel Collection.
Measurements: 12 x 6.5 cm.
Belt buckle with an oval-shaped clasp, which is decorated, in the adjacent rectangular area, with geometric motifs, spaces that were staked using vitreous paste in a technique that is slightly reminiscent of enamelling.
Although the examples with figurative decoration are better known, those with geometric elements are not entirely unique, such as the present one, or those kept in the Museum of Segovia (some very similar to this one), the buckle found in the Castle of Ampuria, one in the Museum of Councils and Visigothic Culture in Toledo, etc. The workshops responsible for these buckles were the same ones that made other bronze works, hence the decorative similarity, a similarity that can also be seen by comparing them with the reliefs that decorated the architecture of the time.
When the Visigoths left Italy with Ataulfus, they moved towards the centre and south of Gaul, passing from there to the Iberian Peninsula. The Visigothic Kingdom of Toulouse (Toulouse, France) then managed to conquer more territory on the peninsula, until Alaric II was defeated by the Franks, losing the French possessions and giving way to the so-called Visigothic Kingdom of Toledo, a period of great importance in the arts (characterised by a clear maintenance of Roman models together with Byzantine influences) and culture in general, which ended with the entry of the Muslims at the beginning of the 7th century.
