Large vessel; Nazca Huari culture, transitional period AD 800-1200.

It has restorations on some of the noses.
Measurements: 39 x 38 cm (diameter).
Large Huari vessel, complete, richly decorated with polychrome, with geometric and zoomorphic motifs, possibly of religious significance, arranged in clearly differentiated bands. The lower part is practically unornamented, which could indicate that the vessel must have remained partially buried in the ground or covered. The main motifs consist of schematic and symbolic figures in the form of inverted heads, whose noses are marked in relief, protruding from the body. These figures are repeated rhythmically along the central band of the belly. The central band, where a frieze of human heads is arranged, has the same design as the faces with open eyes, smiles and facial tattoos on the cheeks. The mouth of the vessel has a flared structure and is also differentiated.
The Huari (or Wari) culture flourished in the central Andes between the 7th and 13th centuries AD, extending as far as the present-day Peruvian departments of Lambayeque, Arequipa and Cuzco. Their pottery, in constant evolution throughout the history of this culture, presents different styles, and includes all kinds of vessels and other objects, many of them zoomorphic or anthropomorphic, generally pieces for ceremonial use.Huari pottery was influenced by three cultures: the Nazca (varied polychromy), the Huarpa (construction techniques) and the Tiahuanaco (pictorial motifs). In fact, scholars claim that the Huari is the synthesis of these three Andean cultures. The oldest Huari pieces are large in size, with a clear Tiahuanaco influence, although little by little the objects became smaller and mass-produced. The characteristic motifs of Huari ceramics include symbolic brushstrokes, representations of animals, mythological beings and mythical beings with feline heads.
