"Jesus in Mateo's house".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 84 x 107 cm, 104 x 127 cm (frame).
In this painting is represented the scene of Jesus in Mateo's house, painted in a classical way, following the Caravaggiesque tenebrism, and playing with the lights and the shadows.
In the scene Jesus appears in Matthew's house, after healing a paralysed man, Jesus stays for some time in the area of Capernaum, by the Sea of Galilee. Again, many, many people come to him, and he teaches them. Then, passing by the tax office, he sees Matthew, also called Levi, sitting there and makes the extraordinary invitation: "Be my follower".
Matthew is most likely aware of the works Jesus has done in the area and of his teachings, as were Peter, Andrew, James and John. Like these four disciples, Matthew accepts the invitation immediately. In his Gospel, he himself recounts that he "got up and followed him" (Matthew 9:9). So he leaves his job as a tax collector and becomes a disciple of Jesus.
Later, perhaps to show his gratitude for the opportunity Jesus has given him, Matthew hosts a great banquet in his house, a scene that appears in the play that concerns us. He invites Jesus, his disciples and several former co-workers, other tax collectors.
Matthew has probably invited these tax collectors and sinners so that they can listen to Jesus and be healed in a spiritual sense, for many of them follow him (Mark 2:15). And Jesus wants to help them to have a good friendship with God. Unlike the proud Pharisees, he does not despise them; rather, he has compassion for them. He is like a doctor to whom all those who are sick in a spiritual sense can go.
Jesus is compassionate towards tax collectors and sinners, but that does not mean that he approves of their sins, but rather that he feels the same affection for them as for those who suffer from physical illnesses.
