Late Gothic processional cross, ca. 1500.Embossed and gilded silver.Measurements: 97 x 44 x 20 cm.
Embossed and gilded silver.
Measurements: 97 x 44 x 20 cm.
This elaborate processional cross, dated around the year 1500, has been entirely worked in embossed silver, a material widely used for this type of object. It is a cross of great richness, profusely decorated with vegetal elements, ribbons and interlacing, combined with carefully chosen relief work. Its obverse side has the Calvary on its knot and praying figures on its arms; the back shows the representation of the Tetramorphos. The figures are contained in quadrilobular cartouches. The macolla, the foot of the processional cross, has a circular barrel decorated with vegetal motifs.
This type of piece was used for important liturgical events, such as processions, and was often changed when there were economic means to do so and in line with new fashions. Precious metals and materials such as gold, silver, gilded silver, enamel, precious stones, etc. were preferred, but if the parish or ecclesiastical authority could not afford them, they were made in other more humble but richer-looking materials, such as gilded copper. In this second case, too, the fashions and techniques of silverware were followed, and striking similarities can be found in works made of different materials.
