MANUEL BARRÓN (Seville, 1814 - 1884)."Panorama of Seville".Oil on canvas.Frame ca. 1860.The frame
"Panorama of Seville".
Oil on canvas.
Frame ca. 1860.
The frame shows traces of xylophages.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 85 x 127 cm; 130 x 176 cm (frame).
Giving greater importance to the landscape than to the small figures within it, in this work Manuel Barrón tries to prioritise the representation of the landscape of his native Seville, dominated by ochre tones, defined by the evening sun. The artist follows a classical type of composition by developing a view in depth. Thus, the bodies of water that make up the terrain are evenly distributed, albeit not on parallel planes but in perspective, achieving a more naturalistic effect. The figures in the foreground stand out: popular Sevillian types who perfectly describe the Andalusian way of life.
The greatest exponent, and possibly the best representative, of Andalusian and Sevillian Romantic landscape painting, Manuel Barrón studied at the Santa Isabel de Hungría School of Fine Arts in Seville between 1828 and 1832 under Antonio Cabral Bejarano. The other figure who influenced his work was the Scottish painter David Roberts, with whom he spent some time in Seville in 1833. He may also have met Jenaro Pérez Villamil, the first and foremost cultivator of Romanticism in Spain, who was only seven years older than Barrón. Barrón spent his entire life in Seville, where he combined painting with teaching, teaching drawing, perspective and landscape painting at the School of Fine Arts. José Jiménez Aranda was particularly outstanding among his pupils. A member of the Academy of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, a founding member of the Artistic Lyceum of Seville (1838) and of the Economic Society of Friends of the Country, his teaching career culminated in his appointment as director of the School of Fine Arts. His works were highly valued during his lifetime, which earned him considerable fame. He took part in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts held in Madrid, and in 1862 Queen Isabella II acquired his canvas "Vista general de Sevilla", which is currently in the palace of Riofrío, in Segovia. Manuel Barrón is represented in the Museo del Prado, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Seville, the Museo Romántico in Madrid and the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, among others.
