ANTONI REYNÉS GURGUÍ (Barcelona, 1853 - 1910).
"Family Portrait, 1893.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated in the lower left corner.
With period frame in wood and gilded stucco.
The frame has a few flaws.
Measurements: 61 x 57 cm; 102 x 94 cm (frame).
In this family portrait, made by Antoni Reynés in 1893, the four characters appear richly dressed in the fashion of the time. The gentleman wears a black suit with a waistcoat and a white shirt with a high, starched collar. The lady is dressed in a black suit with a tight-fitting waist, a subtle neckline in the fashion of the time, and three flowers (also in black) as her only adornment. Her only jewellery is a gold necklace. The girls are dressed entirely in white, in flowing gowns with puffed sleeves. The portrait takes place inside a palatial room with large columns and a tiled floor, reflecting the aristocratic class to which the family belonged.
A painter of landscapes, portraits and genre scenes, brother of the sculptor Josep, Antoni Reynés developed his career in Barcelona between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, making his work known in group exhibitions in such prominent galleries as the Parés (1878, 1879). Among his best-known works is the portrait of Pau Claris of 1880. He is currently represented in the Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona, as well as in various private collections.
