"Untitled", 2021.
Oil and charcoal on canvas.
Attached certificate issued by the artist.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Size: 183 x 141 cm.
Figurative scene starring the image of a boat full of passengers, whose faces cannot be seen. As the Reina Sofia Museum and Art Centre rightly points out in Kcho's work "The sea is always present. His pieces refer to the Cuban landscape and therefore allude to the most decisive element of life on the island, the isolation marked by the geographical limit of the water boundary. His work evokes the sea voyage as an ideal territory for remembrance and nostalgia. Kcho reflects on the phenomenon of migration, a theme from which he creates his scenographies on the journey and which speak of the impossibility of fleeing from our memory, our destiny and our roots. His boats are a metaphor".
Alexis Leiva Machado (Kcho) attended the Leonardo Luberta Primary School of Art on the Isle of Youth. In 1986 he entered the National School of Plastic Arts (ENA) in Havana, graduating in 1990 with a specialisation in painting and sculpture. In 1986, at the age of sixteen, he marked the beginning of his career with the personal exhibition "Kcho Expone Favelas" at the Centro de Artes Plásticas de Nueva Gerona. From 1990 onwards he began to show his work in personal and collective exhibitions both nationally and internationally. In 1991 Kcho held his first personal exhibition at the MNBA for the space "Artist of the Month". That same year he received the Prize awarded by the National Group of Art School Teachers at the Centre of Plastic Arts and Design in Havana, Cuba.
Throughout his prolific career he has taken part in the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011, as well as participating in the Havana Biennale on several occasions. He has also had solo exhibitions at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Panamá (Panama City, 2007) and the Museo Nacional (Brasilia, 2012) and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid, 2000). His work is currently part of prestigious collections, both private and public, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York, USA), the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid, 2000), the Museum of Modern Art (New York, USA), the Museum of Modern Art (New York, USA) and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid, 2000).His work is currently in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York, USA), the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid, Spain), the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, USA), the Ludwig Museum (Cologne, Germany) and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles, USA).
