Painter, historian and art critic, he participated assiduously in scientific excursions through the mountains of Madrid and the outskirts of the capital, which would later serve as inspiration for his works. He earned a doctorate in law and became actively involved in politics, becoming a member of parliament. In 1878 he embarked on a long trip around Europe and America, which enabled him to gain first-hand knowledge of new developments in foreign art. His comfortable economic position enabled him to devote himself to painting as a vocation, thanks to which he was able to develop a totally personal style, without the restrictions that other artists encountered in his evolution, as he did not need to submit to the public's taste. He was a disciple of Carlos de Haes and a friend of the latter, Martín Rico and Joaquín Sorolla, with whom he contributed to modernising the Spanish landscape scene. He travelled around Spain with Carlos de Haes, accompanying him on the trips he used to make with his disciples in search of new natures to capture on canvas. Leaving aside studio work, Beruete devoted himself to plein air painting, influenced by the Barbizon school, in a freer manner than his master. He is now considered to be the sole representative of Spanish Impressionism, a movement he became acquainted with on his trips to Paris. His painting represents the new ideals of Spanish landscape painting, based on direct knowledge of nature. Beruete added to the scientific and geographical interest in landscape a poetic idealisation of it, seeking to combine truth with subjectivism. He was also characterised by his choice of unpublished places as the protagonists of his paintings, thus helping to shape a new image of the Spanish landscape. His attention to the traditionally neglected Castilian countryside helped to dignify it, while his interest in the Guadarrama mountains renewed the perception of it by depicting it from multiple perspectives. In this case he offers us a beautiful view of the Alhambra. The profile of the beautiful palatine city crowns the mountain, which is covered in greenery. In this work, nature acquires an importance equal to that of the monumental construction. Aureliano de Beruete is widely represented in the Prado Museum and in important private collections.
