PIETRO FRANCHI (Italy, 1817-1878).Untitled. 1847.Carrara marble. With inscription on the base.
Untitled. 1847.
Carrara marble.
With inscription on the base.
Sizes: 83 x 33 x 33 cm.
Sculpture made in Carrara marble showing two infants united by a warm embrace. The posture of both transmits a great complicity in a candid and innocent way. Stylistically, the idealisation of the gentleman stands out, a detail also inspired by these antique examples, with a somewhat pictorialist treatment of the hair, which was also common in the 19th century. In addition, the posture of both, one with his leg slightly forward, while the other body is bent following the praxistelic curve. As for the lakes of the young men, they are notable for their great delicacy, which is also reflected in their clothing. The nose, outlined, the small, tight lips and the almond-shaped eyes, show us faces with soft, youthful features. As for the hair, it is worth mentioning the sculptor's work with the trepano, thus achieving great volume in the curls. This type of work became popular in the 19th century, largely influenced by neoclassicism and the trips of the upper classes to countries such as Italy and Greece, known as the Grand Tour. The pieces are inspired by those made in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, especially in Italy.
Active in Carrara during the third quarter of the 19th century, Pietro Franchi was an important sculptor who first studied at the Accademia di Belle Arte in Carrara, after which, in 1833, he was first recognised for his technical skill with the work 'Giulio Cesare s'impossessa dell'erario pubblico'. Throughout his career he copied famous works and created his own fresh compositions.
