COSTA GOREL (Moscow, 1993).
"Splirt, 2020.
Oil on canvas.
Certificate of authenticity enclosed.
Signed in the lower right corner. Signed, dated and titled on the back.
Size: 60 x 50 cm.
Costa Gorel grew up in the tradition of the North German Renaissance. German music, literature, painting, culture and language have greatly influenced him and have played a key role in shaping his style. The basic principles he uses in creating his paintings are those of the Baroque, Renaissance and interior design. Architecture plays a major role in his art, in particular its basis in stone and the golden ratio. Gorelov strives to incorporate elements of Gothic and Baroque architecture into the everyday lives of his characters through bags and accessories that carry the DNA of this architectural heritage. He wants to show that despite changes in trends and different eras, the fundamentals are unwavering and immutable.
Following the artist's own words about his work; "I am interested in tearing the mask off the character in front of the mirror when a person is left alone with himself and his thoughts, longings and feelings. I use sexuality and nudity as a tool to show vulnerability, insecurity and at the same time passion and thirst for life, which are eternally inseparable. With the help of camera scenes (in which the characters are left alone with their inner emotions) I want to talk about different degrees of self-acceptance and overcoming human complexes, pain and fears that, on the one hand, make you feel vulnerable and helpless and, on the other hand, harden you and make you stronger".
Costa Gorel studied at the Moscow Institute of Radio and Television and graduated in Film Directing (Cinema). In his work, Costa explores the emotional and psychological states of people, often depicting them through a figure's interactions with different spaces, objects and fashion items. Fashion, in particular, is central to his self-expression. It is also a symbol that unites epochs, times and traditions.
