19th century frame adapted and with slight faults.
Handwritten letter on verso. Corners with wax seals.
Measurements: 40 x 31.5 cm; 73 x 60 cm (frame).
Although Louis Thévenet was a self-taught painter, he followed in the footsteps of his brother, who was also a painter. Although little is known about his life, it is known that he worked for a long time in Nieuport with Aug. Oleffe (1867-1931). He is now in the Antwerp and Ixelles (Brussels) museums. The present panel depicts a landscape within the framework of Post-Impressionism, marked by the artist's search for a balance between naturalism, pictorial order and personal expression. The space appears perfectly constructed in depth thanks to the colour, the energetic and controlled brushstrokes, very dense in certain areas and lighter in others, and especially through the play of light and reflections.
