PIETRO GABRINI (Rome, 1856-1926).
"Couple on the Coast of Rome".
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower left corner.
The work will be available approximately 15 days after payment has been made.
Size: 54 x 74 cm; 71 x 95 cm (frame).
Trained with Giuseppe De Sanctis, Gabrini specialised in Romantic-inspired painting, mainly intended to depict historical-literary subjects, but with a predilection for sentimental representation. Particularly fond of the Roman countryside, from the mid-1980s onwards he combined historical subjects with a lighter predilection for genre scenes and landscapes treated with the watercolour technique. He became a notable interpreter of these, to the extent that in the nineteen-nineties he joined the Society of Roman Watercolourists, of which he was a member from 1910 to 1915, making an important contribution to the evolution of the group. These were years in which he not only devoted himself to landscapes and genre scenes of the Roman countryside, but also adapted to the prevailing taste of the European market by paying attention to neo-Pompeian or Orientalist themes, as can be seen in watercolours such as The Carpet Seller.
Because of his predilection for landscapes, often marked by sentimental and mystical notes, in 1902 he exhibited the painting Afternoon with the association In Arte Libertas. Famous above all for his success at European exhibitions, he took part in the St. Petersburg exhibition of 1885 with the literary-inspired painting The Old Sailor's Tale. In the meantime, he was much sought after by patrons in central Italy for altarpieces and sacred subjects in general. In fact, he executed several works in Santa Maria delle Grazie and Santa Maria della Misericordia in San Severino Marche. He continued to paint throughout the 1910s and died in his native Rome in 1926.
