Spanish school; first half of the 16th century."God the father".Oil on panel.Measurements: 60 x
"God the father".
Oil on panel.
Measurements: 60 x 120 cm.
The work of landscape format shows as protagonist the figure of God the Father, placed in the centre of the composition and inscribed in a break of Glory of golden light, which finishes in the exterior area with cloud formations. The figure of God is presented to the viewer from the front, blessing with one hand and holding the orb representing the world with the other. Barbado, the author, shows an elderly protagonist with greyish hair but young in his features, a trait that surely indicates the immortality characteristic of the Christian religion. The monumental figure is dressed in a red cloak, a symbol of the suffering and passion to which his son was exposed in order to save mankind. The scene is completed by the presence of several bright red cherubs, which form a circle around the figure of God the Father.
In general, God the Father was a common presence in Counter-Reformation art, at least in Spain, more often as part of other themes (Trinity, combination with the Holy Family, etc.) than alone, as in the present example. Likewise, the contrast between brightly lit areas and others (by comparison) in marked half-light (both very close together), the composition, the monumentality of the figure, the chosen palette, the attention and perfection of the qualities, etc. are details that place the painting within the Spanish school, with a certain recollection of both Italian works and a slight air of works from the Flemish school. Iconographically, it shows the usual model for this Sacred Figure in Spanish art: "Christ Scourged before God the Father" from the second half of the 17th century (attributed to Pedro Antonio Rodríguez; Museo de Bellas Artes de Córdoba), "Trinity" by José de Ribera (around 1635-1636; Museo del Prado, Madrid), "Holy Family with Trinity" by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (between 1675 and 1682; National Gallery, London); etc. However, it is also possible to find some resemblance to earlier paintings (Polyptych of the Mystic Lamb by the van Eyck brothers in the 15th century; "Blessing of God the Father" by Luca Cambiaso; etc.).
