Italian school; 18th century.
"Madonna and Child with angels.
Silver relief.
Measurements: 30 x 17.5 x 2 cm.
Relief made in silver, worked on several planes by means of embossing and finished with chiselled details and stamped textures that seek, by means of contrast, to make the space clearer and deeper. It is worked using the "schiacciato" technique, a system of sculptural relief modelling used by the Romans and perfected in the 15th century by Donatello, which consists of proportionally reducing the size of the relief according to the depth to be represented. This sculptural technique makes it possible to create a bas-relief with a minimal variation (sometimes referred to in millimetres) with respect to the background. In order to give the viewer the illusion of depth, the gradual decrease in the depth of the thickness is complemented by the rigorous application of the laws of perspective, which enhances the visual effect.
Mary is presented half-length in the foreground, showing the Child resting on a classical-style parapet, supported by a cloth held by the Virgin. On either side of Mary's head are heads of cherubs contemplating the scene, surrounded by clouds. The scene is completed with an architectural outline in the background, worked in perspective.
