Sacristy door; Charles II period; late 17th century.
Carved, polychromed and gilded wood.
It retains antique mirrors.
It presents faults in the polychromy and gilding.
Measurements: 205 x 130,5 x 6 cm.
Sacristy door made of carved, gilded and polychromed wood. This piece probably formed part of a larger sculptural ensemble, as a vanishing point and epicentre of the architectural structure. It was very common to decorate these doors with liturgical elements or scenes referring to the life of Christ, although in this case the ornamentation is plant-inspired. The design is structured by a pattern of panels forming an irregular grid. The scheme is divided into two sections, the upper and lower, each consisting of four upper rectangular panels arranged horizontally and three lower rectangular panels arranged vertically. In this way a symmetrical order is established, avoiding excessive repetition and introducing variety and compositional rhythm. The panels are decorated with carvings that recreate vegetal elements.
The aesthetic style of the period of Charles II was characterised by a French Baroque aesthetic, with Versailles being a stylistic reference point in terms of ornamentation. Although it is worth mentioning that the Italian influence was very strong, so that Spanish furniture continued to maintain models inspired by both Flemish and Italian styles, with a markedly Hispanic style.
