Glazed majolica-type ceramic.
Measurements: 38 x 39 x 23 cm.
Enamelled ceramic pitcher with a globular shape that widens in perimeter in the men's area. With a round, narrow base, the piece has almost all of its ornamentation in the central body. This is defined by the presence of a group of vegetal decoration that extends over the entire surface, in an apparently random manner, although it is structured in a symmetrical way. In the central area, a rectangular cartouche reveals an inscription inside. Two handles in the shape of marine animals emerge from the sides, and in the upper central part of the body, a spout leads to the mouth of the round-perimeter vessel. The use of blue, green and yellow tones, as well as its structure, bring it aesthetically close to majolica ceramics.
Urbino and Casteldurante were among the main centres of production of historiated majolica, but there were also numerous factories throughout the country, the most important of which were Faenza, Pesaro, Castelli, Deruta and Caffagiolo. Among the decorative motifs produced throughout the 16th century until the first decades of the 17th century, the grotesques became, thanks to the frescoes of Raphael's Loggia del Vaticano, "Raphaelesque" to surround the historiated medallions of the dozens of jugs, fountains, dishes often decorated with small sculptures of fantastic animals and caryatids of various shapes.
