Palatial floor lamp. China, late Qing dynasty, 19th century.
Carved polychromed and gilded wood.
Some slight flaws in the wood and polychromy.
Measurements: 135 x 40 x 34 cm.
Ancient Chinese standing lamps involve many forms of ancient Chinese art and carving techniques. They usually consisted of an ornate base and a lampshade. The clear lampshades were made of special paper illustrated with images of landscapes, figures, flowers or birds, and sometimes poetry. In ancient China, delicately carved standing lamps were placed in living rooms to decorate the house and to proclaim the wealth of the family, especially of high officials and nobility. The bases were usually made of redwood or other precious Chinese woods such as huali (rosewood). The decoration of the base could include stones and ivory.
The Qing dynasty was the last Chinese imperial dynasty, ruling the present-day country from 1644 to 1912. Founded by Manchu warriors.
