Head. Cyprus, 6th century BC.Limestone.Provenance: Private collection of Columbia University
Limestone.
Provenance: Private collection of Columbia University economics professor Vladimir Gregorievitch Simkhovitch (1874-1959), USA. Vladimir was a great collector of ancient art and works from his collection are preserved in the Smithsonian Musuem, the Metropolitan Museum of NY or the Brooklyn Museum, among others.
Publications: Ancient art from the V.G. Simkhovitch collection, Wolf Rudolph and Adriana Calinescu, Indiana University Art Museum. 1998. Page 24.
In good condition.
Measurements: 11 cm high; 16 cm high with stand.
This head fragment in the Greek Cypriot style probably belonged to a larger sculpture. As for the work itself, it shows a male face with very characteristic features: almond-shaped eyes, large nose and thick lips. His hair is in a delicate up-do. From the archaic style of both the features and the form of the carving, this sculpture belongs to an early group of figures made at the beginning of the 6th century BC.
Ancient Cypriot art refers to all works of visual art originating from Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean, from about 10,000 BC to about 330 AD. During this period various types of objects were produced, such as domestic tools, weapons, jewellery and decorative figures. This range of art attests to the mixture of both native and foreign influences from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome as they successively occupied the country. Works of art produced in ancient Cyprus incorporate almost every visual art medium worked in ancient history, including terracotta, stone, metals, glass, and precious stones.
