Anthropomorphic vessel; Chancay Culture, Peru, AD 1000-1470.

It has restorations on fracture lines.

Measurements: 39 x 22 x 22 cm.
Large Chancay vessel, made of ceramic, decorated with dark pigments and abundant motifs in relief. The anthropomorphic structure of the piece adopts the representation of a squatting figure holding a kero, as an offering. The kero is a South Andean ceremonial vessel, usually made of wood although it can also be made of other materials, such as ceramic, and is characterised by its truncated cone shape, with a wider mouth than the base. The figure depicted is a shaman, dignitary or god, given the importance of his headdress, jewellery and facial painting. The headdress is tall, with a central disc, and he wears a bird on his shoulder. The nose is flat and short, and the mouth is small, almost completely concealed by the painting.
The Chancay was a pre-Inca civilisation that developed on the central coast of Peru during the Late Intermediate period, between 1200 and 1470. It arose after the dissolution of the Wari culture, and was finally conquered by the Inca Empire. Within its material culture, ceramics are particularly noteworthy, produced on a large scale thanks to the use of moulds. Chancay ceramics come in more than 400 different shapes and generally have motifs painted in black or brown on a cream or white background.
