Bronze sculpture on a wooden base.
Sizes: 30 x 8.5 x 14 cm; 31.5 x 8 x 16 cm.
Egyptian sculpture from the Late Epoch, representing the god Osiris in full body. It is made in bronze, in the round. The god is identified by the Atef crown and by his arms crossed over his chest, with which he holds the whip and the staff, which are two of his main iconographic symbols. Osiris is the Egyptian god of resurrection, symbol of fertility and regeneration of the Nile; he is the god of vegetation and agriculture, and also presides over the court of judgement of the dead.
The disintegration of the New Empire ushered in the long period known as the Low Period (7th-4th centuries BC), during which the Egyptian state was progressively weakened, before finally being conquered by Alexander the Great in 332 BC and becoming part of the Hellenistic world. The Ptolemaic period lasted until the Roman conquest in 30 BC. This long period of Roman domination, although it lasted until the Muslim conquest in 638 (from 395, after the death of Theodosius, Egypt became part of the Eastern Roman Empire), included a first period in which the ancient Egyptian structures still dominated, which lasted until the 4th century, when paganism was definitively banned.
