Belonging to the Spanish Romantic school, Eduardo Cano de la Peña specialised in historical themes, although he also carried out an important work as a portraitist. In the present work, Cano de la Peña depicts Miguel Maraña helping a poor man, something that was typical of this endearing and charitable figure who devoted himself to helping the people of Seville in the face of the many calamities that beset them at the time. Eduardo Cano trained in Seville, the city where he has lived since childhood, at the Real Escuela de las Tres Nobles Artes (Royal School of the Three Noble Arts). Shortly afterwards he was made a full member of the Santa Isabel de Hungría School of Fine Arts, where he also taught. On the death of his parents he returned to Madrid, where he continued his studies under the guidance of José and Federico de Madrazo and Carlos Luis de Ribera. He continued his studies in Paris, from where he sent paintings to the National Exhibitions in Madrid in 1856 and 1857, winning first medals. Cano de la Peña became one of the most famous history painters of his generation. On his return to Seville he was appointed curator of the Museum of Fine Arts and professor at Santa Isabel, and contributed to the publications "El Arte en España" and "Museo Universal". Eduardo Cano de la Peña is currently represented in the Museo del Pardo, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Seville, the Museo Romántico in Madrid and the Palacio del Senado, among other public and private collections.
